Confitebor tibi Domine by Giovanni Gabrieli — Lyrics
About Confitebor tibi Domine
This grand motet by Giovanni Gabrieli offers a powerful setting of Psalm 9, verses 1-2, and other scriptural texts. It is suitable for general sacred occasions, especially when a large choir is available, given its extensive voicing for SATB and ATTBar and STTTB. The Latin text speaks of giving thanks to God with all one's heart, recounting His wondrous works, and rejoicing in His salvation. The music would have been conceived for the magnificent spaces of St. Mark's in Venice, its polychoral style creating dramatic contrasts and spatial effects. Later verses, including a section on God's protection 'under the shadow of your wings,' provide further scope for devotional expression.
