About Confitebor primo
This setting of Psalm 111, Confitebor tibi, Domine, would be suitable for a liturgical occasion, perhaps a festival or a special service. Monteverdi’s vibrant motet is written for two choirs: one SATB, the other ATB. The text is a hymn of praise, beginning with thanks to God and enumerating his mighty works, his justice, and his covenant. The two choirs interact, at times singing in alternation, at others in rich polyphony, offering a powerful and dynamic musical reflection on the divine attributes. The Latin text allows for broad application within a sacred context, and the demanding, yet rewarding, vocal writing makes this a significant addition to the repertoire for experienced choirs.
