Marc'Antonio Mazzone's madrigal Con questa bella mano is a charming example of secular Italian part-music from the Renaissance. Scored for three female voices (SSA), the work sets a playful Italian text that urges a beautiful lover to reveal their face. The poet describes how the beloved hides their proud countenance, which is attractive enough to enchant even wild beasts. The lyrics continue to lament that the beloved's eyes, capable of bringing comfort, are cast down, and their sweet smile, which could console the afflicted, is hidden. The singer implores them to lift their gaze and banish the sorrow of those who admire them.
