About Con quel poco di spirto
Giaches de Wert was a master of the Italian madrigal, and this setting of a pastoral dialogue is a prime example of his skill. The text, a poignant exchange between a shepherd and a nymph, explores themes of love, death, and eternal remembrance. The shepherd, facing death, finds solace in the hope of living on in his beloved's heart, while the nymph questions how they can both survive if one dies. The music beautifully captures the emotional weight of their declarations, culminating in a tragic scene where both lovers perish, one by the sword, the other by grief. Scored for an ambitious SAATTTB choir, this piece offers rich harmonic possibilities and a powerful dramatic arc.
