Pomponio Nenna’s SSATB madrigal Con le labra di rose opens with imitative entries that quickly blossom into rich, homophonic textures. The composer uses word-painting to illustrate the text’s playful theme of love and theft. The music’s vibrant energy reflects the speaker’s passionate, if slightly tongue-in-cheek, complaint that Filli has stolen his heart, only for him to retaliate by stealing kisses. The ensuing dialogue, set with skillful interplay between the voices, poses the question of which act of thievery is greater: stealing kisses or stealing a heart. This secular Italian part-song from the Renaissance is a delightful setting of a Petrarchan sonnet.
