Con ceppi e con catene by Giovanni Leonardo Mollica — Lyrics

Con ceppi e con catene M'havete amaro mene Legato l'alm' e'l petto E di servir chi m'arde son costretto. E s'io pur fugo ogn' hora E forza ch'io mi mora Perche dovunque sia Mandate fiam' ardent' a l'alma mia.

About Con ceppi e con catene

A poignant madrigal for two sopranos and tenor, Con ceppi e con catene is a secular Italian setting from the Renaissance. The text describes a lover's despair, bound by chains of love and compelled to serve the one who burns him. He laments that flight is impossible, as ardent flames pursue him wherever he goes, and though his grand love causes him to die in vain, his beloved offers no remedy for his woes. Yet, a flicker of hope emerges, suggesting that gradually he might escape these fires, for nothing can conquer one who conquers himself.
