Filippo Azzaiolo’s Come t’aggio lasciato, o vita mia is an Italian madrigal for SATB voices. The text expresses a profound sense of loss and despair following separation from a loved one. The singer laments the departure, questioning how he could have left the very eyes that give him life. He rails against cruel fortune, which has always been contrary to him. The thought of not returning soon is so unbearable that he vows to take his own life if hope does not sustain him. Azzaiolo’s setting captures the intense emotion of the text through its rich harmonic language and expressive melodic lines, typical of the secular part-music of the Renaissance.
