Imagine a stormy sea, tossed by contrary winds. This Italian villanella from the late Renaissance captures the anguish of a sailor whose ship is battered, its sails torn and oars lost. The text expresses a profound sense of despair and fear, with the mariner lamenting the lack of anchor and the desperate state of his vessel, heading inevitably towards death. Only the intervention of Love can offer solace, guiding him to a safe harbour.
