Combattean dolcemente by Leone Leoni — Lyrics
About Combattean dolcemente
Leone Leoni’s Combattean dolcemente is an SSATB madrigal for mixed voices, setting a secular Italian text. The music opens with a vivid depiction of the mythic battle between Love and Phyllis, the latter armed with her eyes. The interplay between Amor and Filli is musically portrayed, with the voices charting the ebb and flow of their contest. Phyllis initially triumphs, piercing Love with her gaze. However, Love, finding Phyllis’s heart like ice, turns his attack upon himself and then, unable to wound her further, strikes her in the face. The composer uses the five voices to create a rich and dynamic texture, reflecting the dramatic narrative of the text.
