EAT THIS BREAD (JESUS CHRIST, BREAD OF LIFE)

When the communion procession begins, we often need a piece that draws the congregation into quiet reflection rather than overwhelming them with complex arrangements. "Eat This Bread" does exactly that. Originally composed by Jacques Berthier for the Taizé community, this meditative chant has found a comfortable home in our parishes. Its gentle, repeating refrain allows the faithful to sing along from the heart without needing to bury their faces in a hymnbook as they walk to the altar.

The structure of the song is beautifully simple but deeply spiritual. The choir holds down the steady, prayerful ostinato—either singing "Eat this bread, drink this cup" or the alternate "Jesus Christ, bread of life"—while cantors or specific voice sections deliver the verses. These verses are drawn straight from the Bread of Life discourse in the Gospel of John.

During Mass, the contrast between the flowing, continuous harmony of the refrain and the distinct, spoken-like rhythm of the verses creates a profound sense of reverence. It is a perfect choice for the Communion rite, giving both the choir and the congregation a moment to truly focus on the mystery of the Eucharist they are receiving.
