Coenantibus illis

Bartholomeus le Conte's Coenantibus illis is a rich, five-part motet for STTTB voices. The composer crafts a textured and devotional setting of the Latin words spoken by Jesus at the Last Supper: 'As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat, this is my body.' The polyphony here is devotional, with imitative entries and carefully controlled dissonances that draw the listener into the solemnity of the moment.
