About Circumdederunt Regem

The sorrow of death surrounds the king, and the people cry out to the Lord. This motet for treble voices, SSB, opens with a dramatic depiction of these words, with the voices in close imitation. The text continues with a plea for God to arise and see their affliction, followed by a powerful affirmation of God's salvation of Christ his servant. The music reflects this journey from distress to exultation, with the final section calling on all nations to clap their hands and sing with joy. Lully's setting is rich in harmonic colour and melodic invention, creating a moving expression of faith and divine intervention.
