From the Italian Renaissance, Marco da Gagliano's Cingetemi d'intorno is a secular madrigal for SSATB voices. The text, taken from Giovanni Battista Guarini's pastoral drama Il pastor fido, expresses immense joy and triumph. The poet describes being crowned with laurels, having fought and won in the field of Love. He celebrates a victory that nature, art, and heaven itself have conspired to bring about.
