About Cilicio Caecilia
Tiburtio Massaino was a composer of sacred music in the late Renaissance. This motet, Cilicio Caecilia, is written for SATB voices in Latin and falls into the genre of responsories. The text speaks of Saint Cecilia, who subdued her body with a hair shirt and prayed to God, overcoming the pagan official Almachius and calling her fiancés Tiburtius and Valerian to receive their heavenly crowns. The second part identifies her as one of the wise virgins, repeating the call to her fiancés to embrace martyrdom.
