Christus resurgens (Pepys MS) by Anonymous — Lyrics

About Christus resurgens (Pepys MS)

The Easter antiphon Christus resurgens celebrates Christ's resurrection. The text affirms that Christ, risen from the dead, will die no more, and that death has no dominion over him. It emphasizes his death for our sins and his resurrection for our justification. The second part challenges the Jewish guards at the tomb, questioning their failure to protect the king and demanding either the return of the buried body or adoration of the risen Christ, all sung with joyous Alleluias. This two-part setting for AT voices, from the Pepys Manuscript, offers a direct and powerful musical expression of the Easter message.
