About Christus resurgens a5
This five-voice motet, Christus resurgens a5, is ideal for Eastertide services. Orlando di Lasso sets a Latin text drawn from biblical accounts of the Resurrection. The music vividly portrays Christ’s victory over death, with the initial phrases proclaiming that he will die no more. The text then moves to a contemplation of the empty tomb, questioning the guards who failed to prevent the Resurrection. The composer’s masterful handling of the five parts – soprano, alto, tenor, and two basses – creates rich textures that powerfully convey the triumphant message of Easter. The use of a substantial five-part choir allows for a full and resonant sound, perfectly suited to the solemnity and joy of the season.
