Christ is risen from the dead by John Varley Roberts — Lyrics

Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

About Christ is risen from the dead

This stirring anthem for SATB choir celebrates the central mystery of Easter. The text, drawn from scripture, speaks of Christ's resurrection as the first fruits of those who sleep, and issues a call to awaken from spiritual slumber, promising divine light to the faithful. John Varley Roberts, a prolific Victorian church musician, crafts music that rises to the grandeur of the message. The English text is straightforward and powerful, making it an accessible and uplifting choice for services during the Easter season or any occasion focusing on redemption and new life. Its resonant harmonies and clear melodic lines offer a rewarding experience for both choir and congregation.
