Christ, be our Light

When we pull out "Christ, be our Light" for rehearsal, there is always a quiet shift in the room. Bernadette Farrell gave us a melody that feels like a gentle, steady walk forward. The verses speak directly to the human condition—our shared hunger, our thirst for peace, and the cold reality of a troubled world. It is a song that asks us not just to wait for salvation, but to become the very hands and feet of God.

In the choir loft, we often use this piece during Advent, as the lyrics perfectly capture that deep, watchful waiting in the darkness. Yet it works just as beautifully as an entrance or communion hymn throughout the year. The transition from the reflective, unison verses into the bright, harmonised refrain is always a powerful moment. When the voices finally lift to sing "Shine in your church gathered today," it feels less like a performance and more like a collective prayer for our congregation.

Singing this requires a balance of restraint and warmth. The verses need to be clear and storytelling, allowing the congregation to hear the petitions for the homeless and the hungry. By the time we reach the final verse, asking to be made servants to one another, the music has built a true sense of community. It reminds us why we gather to sing in the first place.
