About Chi mi dipinse il viso

This Renaissance madrigal for SSTTB voices sets a Petrarchan sonnet in Italian. The text explores the paradox of physical beauty leading the soul to contemplate eternal good. The poet asks that his spirit, drawn to divine light emanating from his beloved's eyes, not be spurned. He assures her that by granting his humble plea, she will live forever within him. Ingegneri, a contemporary of Monteverdi, crafts a rich and expressive setting that allows the choir to convey the sophisticated emotional and spiritual journey of the poem. Its contrapuntal textures and harmonic language are characteristic of the late sixteenth-century madrigal tradition.
