Berchem’s Che rami e ceppi e tronchi e sassi e zolle is a madrigal for SAAT voices. The music opens with a flurry of notes, depicting the violent disruption of the water described in the text. This Italian secular part-song is characterised by its vivid musical imagery. The text itself tells of a torrent of earth and stone, soiling the clear water, leaving the once-pristine stream murky and unclean. The weary narrator, overcome by his strong emotions – his indignation, his grave hatred, his burning anger – can no longer continue. He falls onto the grass, sighing towards the heavens, exhausted by the force of his feelings.
