Che fai, Dori, che pensi? by Orazio Vecchi — Lyrics

Che fai, Dori, che pensi? Avrò mai pace, Pace e letizia avrai. Deh! Dimmi l’hora Quando vedrai dal ciel scender l’aurora. Che fai, Dori, che parli? Avrò mai tregua?

About Che fai, Dori, che pensi?

This charming Italian canzonetta by Orazio Vecchi captures a tender dialogue between two lovers. Dori questions when she will find peace and joy, or respite and comfort. Her lover reassures her, urging her to dismiss the light and for evening to come swiftly, lest she perish. Vecchi sets this amorous exchange for four-part choir (SATB), creating a delightful interplay of voices that reflects the gentle back-and-forth of the text. It is a fine example of the secular part-music popular in the late Renaissance, suitable for adding a touch of playful romance to a programme.
