Clément Janequin was one of the most important composers of French chansons in the 16th century. Ce sont galants is a secular four-part song from his output. The text speaks of gallants setting out to rejoice, wishing no blame upon others, but dedicating heart, body, and soul to service, in hope of enjoying greater rewards. Janequin's setting captures the lighthearted and amorous spirit of the text with its characteristic melodic grace and rhythmic vitality, typical of the secular part-music of the Renaissance.
