Carthagena by Samuel Holyoke — Lyrics

Psalmus Asaph.

About Carthagena

Samuel Holyoke's Carthagena is a setting of a sacred text that begins with a powerful declaration from God. The words paint a scene of divine power, with God calling the earth from east to west, appearing from Zion in splendor. The text speaks of God's inevitable arrival, accompanied by fire and storm, calling heaven and earth to witness the judgment of His people. It emphasizes that God seeks righteousness, not sacrifices, and His presence is eternal. The SATB voicing allows for a rich harmonic setting of this dramatic biblical passage, translating the grandeur and authority of the message into choral sound. The inclusion of both Latin and English lyrics offers flexibility for performance and understanding.
