Cantavan quattro legiadrette Ninfe, in sì soavi accenti ch'acquetarono il mar fermar i venti quando appresso le belle Damon s'assise, e raddoppiò i concenti, spargend'il suon in queste parti e'n quelle.

About Cantavan quatro legiadrette Ninfe

Jean de Castro was a composer of the late Renaissance, and this charming piece is a secular Italian madrigal for three female voices (SSA). The text tells of four graceful nymphs singing so sweetly that they calm the sea and still the winds. A shepherd named Damon sits among them and joins in, his music spreading in all directions. The poet, drawn by this delightful harmony, finds himself captivated, returning to listen to the enchanting song of one of the nymphs. Castro’s setting captures the pastoral imagery and romantic longing of the text, creating a light and elegant musical picture.
