About Cantate Domino canticum novum, Op. 1,1
This substantial motet for SATB choir is settings of a Latin text that draws from Psalm 96, the Song of Songs, and the Book of Revelation. It opens with a joyous invitation to sing a new song to the Lord, a call echoed throughout the Psalms. The text then shifts to a more intimate, bridal imagery from the Song of Songs, where the singer pleads to be marked with a seal of love, describing love as strong as death. The work concludes with a doxology, blessing the name of the Lord. Madlseder's setting would be fitting for a service where the strength and faithfulness of God's love are central themes, perhaps for a special occasion or a feast day.
