About Cantate Domino canticum novum
Francisco Guerrero was a leading Spanish composer of sacred polyphony in the late Renaissance. This motet, Cantate Domino canticum novum, is set for SSATB voices and is sung in Latin. The text is drawn from Psalm 98 and Psalm 96, calling for a new song to be sung to God for his wondrous deeds and salvation. It describes God revealing his justice to the nations and remembering his mercy to Israel. The jubilant verses urge all the earth to sing, exult, and play instruments, proclaiming the arrival of the Lord to judge the earth.
