About Cantate Domino a 24
Jacob Handl's Cantate Domino a 24 is a monumental sacred motet written for an unprecedented eight choirs. The vast forces are deployed in a richly imitative texture, reflecting the ecstatic praise of the text. The Latin antiphon calls for new songs, rejoicing, and exultation in God the King. It speaks of the saints singing God's praises with instruments and voices, and God's favour upon his people. The text then turns to a more martial depiction of the saints carrying out divine judgment, glorifying God through their actions.
