Laus cantici ipsi David. Venite, exsultemus Domino; jubilemus Deo salutari nostro;
praeoccupemus faciem ejus in confessione, et in psalmis jubilemus ei:
quoniam Deus magnus Dominus, et rex magnus super omnes deos.
Quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terrae, et altitudines montium ipsius sunt;
quoniam ipsius est mare, et ipse fecit illud, et siccam manus ejus formaverunt.
Venite, adoremus, et procidamus, et ploremus ante Dominum qui fecit nos:

This eight-part motet for SSAT.ATBB voices sets a powerful Latin text from the Psalms. Hieronymus Praetorius crafts a grand and festive soundscape, with the double choir writing allowing for a rich dialogue between the upper and lower voice groups. The music surges with energy, particularly in the opening exhortations to praise and exult. As the text moves towards a more reflective plea to hear God's voice and not harden one's heart, Praetorius skilfully adjusts the dynamic and textural intensity. The composer’s mastery of polyphony is evident throughout, creating a monumental work suitable for a major sacred occasion.
