Calami sonum ferentes by Cipriano de Rore — Lyrics
About Calami sonum ferentes
Cipriano de Rore's Calami sonum ferentes is a secular madrigal for BBBB, TTTB voices, sung in Latin. The text paints a picture of reed pipes, usually associated with light, pleasant music, contrasting with the deep grief of the composer's heart. It speaks of a shepherd's lament, unable to be soothed by the usual pastoral melodies, and invokes the Muse of Sirmio, the pleasant grove near Lake Garda. This Muse, who was gentle to Lesbia, is asked to join the sad poet in his sorrow, blending his mournful song with the sweet sound of the pipes.
