Bonum est confiteri by Claudio Merulo — Lyrics
About Bonum est confiteri
The Latin text, drawn from Psalm 91, praises God: "It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to your name, O Most High." Claudio Merulo’s motet sets this joyful declaration of praise. The work is scored for a substantial choir, divided into two contrasting groups: a smaller ensemble of three altos, three tenors and two basses (AATTTBB) and a larger choir of up to seven voices (SSAATTB). This allows for a rich interplay of textures and dynamic effects, moving from intimate moments to grand pronouncements. Merulo, a significant composer of the late Renaissance, explores the devotional text with musical invention, bringing his skill in polyphony to bear on this sacred offering.
