Orlando di Lasso's French chanson Bon jour, mon coeur would make a delightful opening number for a spring concert or a romantic-themed programme. The text, a declaration of love, addresses the beloved with a cascade of affectionate terms: 'my heart,' 'my life,' 'my eye,' 'my dear friend,' and 'my sweet new flower.' The singer protests that, despite any outward appearance of hardness or rebellion, his devotion is absolute. He rejects worldly honour, courtly favour, and riches in favour of his love. This four-part setting (SATB) captures the charming effusiveness of the original words with Lasso's characteristic melodic grace and rhythmic vitality.
