Blessed are those servants by Ernest John Moeran — Lyrics

Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching. Verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. (Luke 12, vv. 37, 38, 40)

About Blessed are those servants

Ernest John Moeran sets a passage from the Gospel of Luke, where Jesus speaks of the virtues of faithful vigilance. The text paints a vivid scene: the master returns from a journey to find his servants watchful and ready, and in turn, he girds himself to serve them. This promise of divine reward for readiness is powerfully conveyed in this SATB anthem. Moeran's setting, sung in English, emphasizes the solemnity and hopeful anticipation of Christ's return, urging listeners to 'Be ye therefore ready also' for he comes 'at an hour when ye think not'.
