Blessed are the merciful by Henry Hiles — Lyrics
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy, O blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 5: 7,3,8
About Blessed are the merciful
Henry Hiles composed this sacred anthem for SATB choir. The text is drawn from the Beatitudes in the Gospel of Matthew, focusing on the merciful, the poor in spirit, and the pure in heart. Hiles sets these comforting words in English, crafting a piece that reflects the devotional nature of its source. The music offers a setting that is both profound and accessible for choirs looking to include meaningful sacred repertoire. Its structure and harmonic language are typical of the anthem tradition, providing a rich backdrop for the scriptural text. This anthem is suitable for services or concerts where reflections on Christian virtues are desired.
