About Benedictus in D minor

Elway Bevin's Benedictus in D minor is a setting of a canticle often sung at Morning Prayer, traditionally in Advent. The text, taken from the Gospel of Luke, is the prophecy of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. It speaks of God's visitation and redemption of his people, the raising up of a horn of salvation in the house of David, and the promise of salvation from enemies. Bevin sets this Latin text for SAATB choir, creating a rich sound ideal for a congregational setting. The music would offer a compelling opportunity for choirs to explore the devotional character of these ancient words.
