About Benedictus Dominus Deus
The text of this motet, Benedictus Dominus Deus, draws on Old Testament accounts of divine intervention in battle, praising God as the Lord of Hosts. It speaks of God's strong hand fighting for his people, protecting them, and ultimately giving them victory, echoing the triumphs of Samson and Gideon. The energetic Latin words invite rejoicing and exultation. Giovanni Croce crafts this piece for a large choral force, imaginatively dividing it into two SATB choirs and an SAATTTBB choir, creating a powerful and antiphonal sound world to match the martial and triumphant spirit of the text.
