Benedictus Dominus by Ludwig Daser — Lyrics

Psalmus ipsi David. Ad te, Domine, clamabo; Deus meus, ne sileas a me: nequando taceas a me, et assimilabor descendentibus in lacum. Exaudi, Domine, vocem deprecationis meae dum oro ad te; dum extollo manus meas ad templum sanctum tuum. Ne simul trahas me cum peccatoribus, et cum operantibus iniquitatem ne perdas me; qui loquuntur pacem cum proximo suo, mala autem in cordibus eorum. Da illis secundum opera eorum, et secundum nequitiam adinventionum ipsorum. Secundum opera manuum eorum tribue illis; redde retributionem eorum ipsis. Quoniam non intellexerunt opera Domini, et in opera manuum ejus destrues illos, et non aedificabis eos.

About Benedictus Dominus

The text of this motet is a fervent prayer from Psalm 28, imploring God for help and protection from enemies. The composer Ludwig Daser sets this Latin plea for divine intervention in a substantial work for double choir (SATB.SATB). The opening words express a profound sense of vulnerability, a cry to God not to remain silent but to hear the suppliant’s voice and lift their hands in earnest supplication. The prayer moves from seeking personal deliverance to a plea for divine justice against those who speak peace but harbour malice in their hearts. Daser’s grand double-choir writing amplifies the drama and urgency of the text, creating a powerful and resonant musical setting.
