About Benedictus
This setting of the Benedictus by Antonio Caldara opens with a serene and flowing melodic line, characteristic of the Baroque era. The intimate SAB and SST voicings create a rich yet transparent texture, allowing the interplay between the upper voices and the bass line to be clearly heard. The Latin text, proclaiming praise for the one who comes in the name of the Lord, is treated with devotional warmth. Caldara’s skillful writing ensures that the harmonic language supports the sacred meaning, building towards the exultant cry of Hosanna in excelsis. This motet offers a beautiful and accessible musical meditation on a key liturgical text.
