Josquin des Prez, or possibly Jean Guyot, was a master of Renaissance polyphony. This grand motet, Benedicta es caelorum regina, is scored for twelve voices, divided into three distinct choirs: SSST, TTTT, and BBB. The Latin text is a Marian antiphon, exalting the Virgin Mary as queen of heaven and lady of the world, offering medicine to the sick. It addresses her as the star of the sea and mother of God, praising her role in the Incarnation. The motet unfolds with rich, complex textures, drawing on the full sonic potential of its twelve-part scoring to create a majestic and devotional atmosphere, culminating in a plea for her intercession.
