About Benedicam Dominum a 12
This is Andrea Gabrieli's Benedicam Dominum, a sacred motet for twelve voices in three distinct choirs: SATB, ATBB, and TBBB. The Latin text is drawn from various Old Testament sources, including the Psalms and the First Book of Samuel. It opens with a narrative passage concerning David's cunning feigned madness before King Achimelech, before transitioning into a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God. The text expresses profound trust and reliance on the Lord, celebrating His deliverance from troubles and inviting all to magnify His name. The composer's setting for such a large and varied ensemble allows for rich textural possibilities and antiphonal effects, creating a grand and sonorous musical experience.
