Ben sperai col partire by Alessandro Striggio — Lyrics
Ben sperai col partire
Da voi dolce d'amor nemica e mia,
Di dovermi morire,
Ma la mia sorte ria,
Mi tien pur vivo in lagrime ed in foco.

About Ben sperai col partire
Alessandro Striggio's Ben sperai col partire is a secular madrigal for STTTB voices, sung in Italian. The text expresses the poet's despair at surviving an intended departure which he hoped would lead to death. Instead, his ill fortune keeps him alive in tears and fire, with no solace to be found in distance. He concludes that only by returning to his beloved, crying out for either death or mercy, can he find respite from his suffering.
