Ben mi credea by Orlando di Lasso — Lyrics
About Ben mi credea
The poet laments that he had expected to pass his days as he had in the past, without new studies or efforts. But since his lady no longer grants him her accustomed aid, he cries to Love, who teaches him such new skills. He questions whether he should scorn this, as Love makes him at his age a thief of her fair, graceful light, without which he would not live amidst such suffering. He wishes he had taken up in his youth the style he now needs to adopt, for youthful errors bring less shame.
