Ben fu l'Ape ingegnosa by Antonio Morari — Lyrics
About Ben fu l'Ape ingegnosa
This Italian madrigal by Antonio Morari sets words by Giuliano Gosellini, from his 1598 Fiori di madrigali. The text paints a vivid scene, comparing a lover's sting to that of a bee. The poet, addressing the beloved, praises the bee's ingenuity in stinging the beloved's beautiful face, finding the beloved as cruel to them as the bee was to the beloved. The beloved, it seems, has been stung by a new bee of love, and in revenge, perhaps without pity, has pierced the poet's heart. This setting for SATB voices captures the essence of Renaissance secular part-music, offering a dramatic and expressive interpretation of the text's metaphorical conceit.
