About Belle Donne
Simone Molinaro's secular canzonetta Belle Donne is written for three voices (SAT). The piece explores the lyrical text by asking women who they would choose as a husband: a flawed man or a jealous young man. The music sets the questions and the women's imagined replies, playfully contrasting the desirable qualities of a suitor with the reality of choosing a partner. The interplay between the voices reflects the lighthearted and conversational nature of the text, as the music seeks to capture the spirit of the dialogue between the ladies and the speaker.
