About Bella Filli - Filli crudele
Giovanni Stefani's Bella Filli - Filli crudele is a secular Italian madrigal from the Renaissance. The text expresses the fervent pleas of a lover to his cruel mistress, Filli. He begs her to turn her loving eyes upon him, declaring that the light of her gaze would be enough to consume his heart, and his soul would depart his body with pleasure, if only to please her. He laments that his beloved is so distant and perhaps takes pleasure in his suffering, yet he only desires to die for her. He pleads that if she truly wishes him to die, she should look upon his torment and see how his soul is betrayed to death, begging this ungrateful Filli to grant him death as a final act of pity.
