Johannes Brahms’s part-song Bei nächtlicher Weil is ideal for a secular concert programme. The text tells the story of a hunter by a forest spring, lamenting a mermaid who appeared to him in a dream and torments him. His plea for peace is answered by a voice from the spring, inviting him to enter and find rest. He plunges in and is met by his love, finally finding peace.
