About Beatus vir qui timet Dominum
Philippe de Monte was a prolific composer of sacred and secular music in the late Renaissance. This motet, Beatus vir qui timet Dominum, is a setting of a Latin text from the Old Testament, Ps. 112:1-9. The text speaks of the blessed man who fears the Lord, finding his delight in his commandments and his legacy secure. It also describes the righteous man as a light shining in darkness, whose justice endures forever. The motet is written for a substantial choir of six voices, SAATTB, offering rich harmonic possibilities for the singers. It is a powerful and devotional setting, typical of the sacred motet tradition of its era.
