About Beatus Vir (Ps. CXI) - IV tone falsibordoni
Tomás Luis de Victoria, a giant of Spanish Renaissance polyphony, composed this setting of Psalm 111, Beatus Vir. As a Vesper Psalm, it would have been sung during evening prayer services in the Catholic Church. Victoria’s setting for SATB choir is written in Latin and employs the falsibordone style. This technique, characterized by its syllabic, homorhythmic texture, creates a clear and direct musical expression of the sacred text. The psalm speaks of the blessed man who fears the Lord, whose house is filled with riches and justice, and whose memory endures eternally, providing a profound reflection on righteousness and divine favour.
