About Beatus vir a 5
This setting of the Vespers psalm Beatus vir is for a five-part choir of SSATB. The Latin text, from Psalm 111, speaks of the blessed man who fears the Lord, finding strength, prosperity and enduring justice. It describes light rising in darkness for the upright, and the righteous man who is merciful and generous, his memory eternal and his heart steadfast. The music would have been performed in a sacred setting, likely during Vespers services in the late Baroque period. Giovanni Paolo Colonna was a significant composer and organist of this era, working in Bologna and Rome.
