Beatus Joannes

Francisco Guerrero's motet Beatus Joannes for SATB choir opens with a compelling musical depiction of the text's narrative. The music is built from imitative entries and homophonic declamation, creating a rich texture that reflects the words of John the Baptist. As John speaks to the crowds, proclaiming his own baptism in water and the presence of one mightier than he, the SATB voices interweave and respond, sometimes in close harmony, sometimes with a more expansive feel. The Latin text, drawn from the Gospels, describes John's humility in the face of Christ's imminent arrival and his prophecy of baptism by the Holy Spirit.
