Beata Barbara by Giaches de Wert — Lyrics
About Beata Barbara
Giaches de Wert's motet Beata Barbara depicts the final moments of Saint Barbara. The text describes her voluntary embrace of a glorious martyrdom over a hateful life, as she is led to the place of her suffering. With bended knees and bowed head, she accepts the consummation of her martyrdom. This sacred work is written for a large choir of six voices (SAATTB). Wert was a prominent composer of the later Renaissance, known for his expressive motets and madrigals. Beata Barbara stands as a powerful example of his sacred vocal writing, masterfully setting the dramatic Latin text.
